Rifco release digital comedy sketches by new writers

28 November 2016

Rifco have published five comedy sketches by young British Asian writers on online arts platform Canvas.

Watch the comedy sketches below.

In September, Rifco held a writing workshop for budding comedy writers between the ages 16 and 24. Over the two days, participants were mentored by Rifco’s Artistic Director Pravesh Kumar and guest mentors - comedians Guz Khan and Mawaan Rizwan.

At the end of the workshop, the participants were tasked with writing a script for the chance to have it professionally produced by Rifco for Canvas.

The five scripts selected and filmed are Taxi Driver and Child Genius by 17-year-old Daya Kaur Bharj, British jobs for White people by 23-year-old Natassia Dhanraj, Speak English by 22-year-old Karim Khan and The Wedding by 20-year-old Natasha Vasandani.

The sketches feature some familiar faces from past Rifco productions including Reece Bahia (Laila The Musical), Jessica Dennis (The Deranged Marriage), Rekha John-Cheriyan (The Deranged Marriage), Sophia Lewis (British Asian Festival), Stephen Lloyd (The Deranged Marriage),  Sukh Ojla (MummyJi Presents), and Sheena Patel (Laila The Musical).

Rifco has made a commitment to delivering a structured pathway of support for young British Asian and South Asian artists called Rifco Associates. At core of this programme is a bespoke approach to each artist through a programme of seed commissions, workshops and peer-to-peer mentoring. Find out more about our the scheme here.

The comedy writing project is funded by Canvas - an Arts Council England funded digital initiative. Combining original content with videos from some of the country's leading arts and cultural organisations, Canvas aims to encourage younger audiences to engage in the arts on YouTube and other digital platforms. The project is also funded by the Arts Council's Amplify initiative.
